David Allan Coe was born in Akron, Ohio. He had a deep love for music and singing since his childhood. Coe admired Johnny Ace a lot as to his favorite singer. At nine, he was sent to the Starr Commonwealth reform school for boys. He spent 17 years of his life in correctional facilities and three years at the Ohio Penitentiary.

Coe spent many years in boarding school and then in prison, so he had negativity in his behavior, attitude, and actions. But he received encouragement from Screamin’ Jay Hawkins for writing songs in prison. Both spent many years together in prison and became hope and inspiration for each other.

In 1967, he performed on the street and got the attention of Shelby Singleton, who was the owner of the independent record label Plantation Records. Coe then signed a contract with Shelby for his label.

In 1970, Coe presented his debut album, Penitentiary Blues. In 1971, he started working as a writer in the Windows Publishing Company, Inc. in Tennessee and remained until 1977 for six years. Many singers earned an excellent reputation by using songs written by Coe. Coe became one of Nashville’s hottest songwriters after releasing “Would You Lay with Me” in 1973.
