Freeway was Leslie Pridgen in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US on 6 August 1978. He adopted the stage name ‘Freeway’ from the infamous drug trafficker as he thought that more people would listen to Freeway rather than Leslie.
When he was in High School, Freeway started to take part in freestyle battles. When he was rapping on a stage in his hometown nightclub, he met fellow Philadelphia native Beanie Sigel.
Freeway started his music career on 25 February 2003 when he released his first album titled Philadelphia Freeway. This album featured many rappers from Roc-A-Fella and was produced by people affiliated with Roc-A-Fella.
Afterwards, Freeway and Beanie Sigel compiled the people from Philadelphia into the group called State Property. The album produced the biggest hits of the entire music career of Freeway, the two singles “What We Do” and “Flipside”. Freeway was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2015 and he shared his experience with the world in his 2016 album, Free Will. It was released independently and this made him an official ambassador for the Kidney Foundation and he had to wait for three years to get a kidney transplant.
Jay-Z had made an entertainment company and Freeway came back to work with him after years of parting ways. Freeway released his sixth solo album on June 22 working alongside Jay-Z.
