Gary Chapman was born Gary Winther Chapman on August 19, 1957, in Waurika, Oklahoma, United States but he grew up in De Leon, Texas with his four siblings: two brothers and two sisters. His father Rev. Terry W. Chapman worked as a pastor while his mother was a homemaker.
Chapman began playing the guitar when he was just ten years old and soon began writing his own songs. During his high school and college days, he performed in bands.
After graduating from high school, he attended Bible college that is now called Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas. After college, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and worked as a guitarist for the Rambos.
In 1979, Gary Chapman wrote the song “Father’s Eyes” and it became the title track to Amy Grant’s Grammy-nominated second album My Father’s Eyes.
In 1982, his song “Finally” became No. 1 on the country music charts and he also received a Dove Award as Songwriter of the Year from the Gospel Music Association.
Chapman continued to write songs and produce music until the early 1990s. In 1987, he performed the song “Brave Hearts” for Touchstone Pictures.
