Jo-Issa Rae Diop was born in Los Angeles, California on January 12, 1985. Her father Abdoulaye Diop is a doctor and her mother Delyna Diop (née Hayward) is an educator.
Issa Rae and her family lived in Dakar, Senegal for a while before they moved to Potomac, Maryland. When she was young, they moved again to LA. There, she enrolled at King Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science where she learned acting.
Issa Rae enrolled at Stanford University for her college education. During her free, she made music videos, plays, and a reality series which she called “Dorm Diaries”. She also became friends with Tracy Oliver in college who produced “Awkward Black Girl”.
Issa Rae started her web series “Awkward Black Girl” in 2011 and it went viral. To fund the rest of its first season, Tracy Oliver raised money and got more than 50 thousand dollars from donations. The rest of the season was uploaded on Issa’s own youtube channel.
