Born on May 27, 1971, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lisa Lopes was one of the four members of the Grammy-winning American hip-hop group TLC. Her mother is Wanda Denise (née Andino), a seamstress and her father is Ronald Lopes Sr., a US Army staff sergeant.
According to Lisa, her father was very strict and very domineering and she felt like they were in a BootCamp growing up but she also said that her father was a very talented musician who played different kinds of instruments like piano, saxophone, clarinet, harmonica and many more.
Lisa’s parents divorced when she was still young and her grandmother from her father’s side was the one who raised her.
Lisa started playing the keyboard and composed her own songs when she was still around 7 years old. When she turned 10 years old, she formed a musical group called “The Lopes Kids” with her siblings. They sang gospel songs at some events and in the church.
Lisa’s music career started in earnest when she met Tionne Watkins and Rozonda Thomas. The three of them bonded over their shared interest in music and decided to form a girl group. They were later joined by drummer, Anthony “TC” Crump.
The newly formed group went through a few name changes until they finally settled for TLC, the initials of each member’s first name. They released their debut album, Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip in 1992 and it was an instant success. The album went multi-platinum and spawned several hit singles like “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”, “Baby-Baby-Baby” and “What About Your Friends”.
TLC went on to release several more albums over the next decade including CrazySexyCool (1994), FanMail (1999) and TLC (2002). The group sold more than 75 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.
In 1994, Lisa Lopes started a relationship with NFL football player Andre Rison. The two of them had a tumultuous relationship and they often made headlines for their public fights.
Lopes gave birth to a daughter, Raina Lopes, later that year. She and Rison eventually divorced in 1997.
In 2001, Lopes started dating NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. The two of them were together until her death in 2002.
On April 25, 2002, Lisa Lopes was killed in a car accident while on a trip to Honduras. She was driving an SUV with seven other people when the vehicle went off the road and hit a tree. Lopes was the only one who died in the accident.
After she died, Lisa Lopes’ family set up a Foundation website where you can learn more about her work and legacy.
