Evans was born and raised in North Carolina by his father Theodore Evans Sr who worked as a dentist, and his mother Annie Sue Evans, a school teacher. He received his high school education at Palmer Memorial Hospital, an exclusive private school for African American students. While still in high school, Evans’ family moved to California where he joined Los Angeles High School.
Evans enrolled at Los Angeles City College to study acting after graduating from high school.
Evans was a college student when he received an offer to join the cast of All in the Family, a TV show produced by John Rich. In the show, Evans played a character named Lionell Jefferson the son of a family that moved into the same street as the Bunkers.
The show’s creator Norman Lear preferred to give the role to Cleavon Little but Rich brought up the idea of using Evans who was thought to appear less threatening. Evans starred on the show for its entire run and was also a cast member for The Jeffersons spinoff on the same network.
Evans ended his contract with The Jeffersons following a series of creative disagreements between him and the show’s creators. Norman Lear was not in favor of adding more screen time to Evans’ character and this went contrary to the actor’s view of his role on the show.
Evans worked as a writer and creator of the TV show Good Times starting from 1974 to 1979. In 1976, Evans appeared in a sitcom titled The Practice. He played a creative role in developing sitcoms during his career.
Evans met his future wife Helena Jefferson in July 1874 and the two soon started dating. Their wedding was held on 10 January 1976. Helena Jefferson passed away on 11 September 2002 after having been diagnosed with breast cancer.
In 1980, Evans died of throat cancer at his parents house in Twentynine Palms in California. Evans and his wife Helena Evans had two daughters, Carlena and Tammie.
