In 1991, Buckley was hired by John C. Bogle, the chairman and founder of Vanguard, as his assistant. At the time, Buckley was a young Harvard graduate looking to make a name for himself in the world of hedge funds and investment banking. Over the years, Buckley earned the trust of Vanguard’s board and rose through the ranks to become Chief Information Officer in 2001.
