Nav was born and raised in Toronto, Canada on 3 November 1989. His parents are Punjabi Sikh immigrants who moved from Punjab, India to settle in Toronto. His family lived in Rexdale, a neighborhood in Toronto.
His father worked as a forklift operator while his mother got a job as a computer engineer. When Nav was in the third grade, his mother bought him a boombox which helped inspire his interest in contemporary music.
While still in school, Nav began producing beats for underground artists in Toronto and making mashups of rap and R&B music. At the time he used a Sony music production software called Acid Pro.
Nav joined West Number Junior Middle School and later went to Thistletown Collegiate Institute for his high school diploma. After high school, he attended the Metalworks Institute in Mississauga, Ontario.
He studied Audio Production and graduated with a diploma.
Nav was cultivating a career as a record producer when in July 2015 he was offered to produce a record called Back to Back by Canadian rapper Drake. The following year, Drake included a song by Nav on his OVO Sound Radio.
By September 2016, Nav had recorded several songs, some of which he uploaded to his SoundCloud account. One if these songs was called Take Me Simple. He later uploaded the song Myself, which quickly went viral and led to multiple offers from recording companies.
