It was Motown Records that came up with the name Rockwell, and Gordy, who was a young up-and-coming artist, agreed with the name. In 1984, Rockwell recorded the single “Somebody’s Watching Me”, with his childhood friends Michael Jackson and Jermaine Jackson singing the hook and chorus.
The album was released by Motown Records and was certified Gold, selling two million copies in the US. It reached #1 on the Billboard R&B chart and held the spot for five weeks. Rockwell recorded follow-up singles but the songs performed poorly in the charts.

Rockwell was not the only member of the Gordy family to record songs under the banner of Motown Records. His uncle, Robert Gordy released a single called “Everyone Was There” in 1958, and the song spent several weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100.
In 2021, “Somebody’s Watching Me” became popular on the social media platform TikTok, leading to a remake of the 1984 album with additional songs and several remixes. The album’s title track was recorded again and was included in the deluxe edition.
