Early Life

Sheck Wes was born in Harlem to Senegalese parents on the 10th of September, 1998. They moved to the United States where his father worked as a tailor. Later, he started assisting famous American designers like Dapper Dan. Sheck Wes had a difficult childhood as his home burned down to ashes in a fire accident. He had to live in a shelter with his family. When they moved to another house, the same incident happened and they ended up living in public housing. His parents had to work hard to run the home. Since they were busy doing their jobs, Sheck had to live alone.

His parents were concerned about his future, so they decided to shift him to Milwaukee. His mother also moved with him but his father had to stay in New York to earn money. He used to visit his father during the summer and the holidays. He never wanted to live in Milwaukee and always preferred New York City life. He also developed an interest in rapping at a very young age. He also made a group with his friends named “Mill Yorkers”

Sheck was initially interested in playing basketball. He also started modeling and got recognition as a model. He worked as a model for Kanye West’s clothing line as well. Once he had to choose between a basketball match and a fashion show. He decided to go for the show and lost his position as a basketball team member.

He changed his name to “Sheck Wes” when he decided to pursue his music career. His mother was worried about his future, so she sent him to Senegal. He got ample time there to improve his songwriting skills. He was quite serious about his music career and started recording songs when he got back home in New York. He used to upload his songs on his SoundCloud and on his YouTube channel. It took time but his songs started becoming popular.

His friend, Mohamad Bamba, asked him to write a song for him which he named “Mo Bamba”. The song got famous and Sheck included it in his debut album.
